HipChat doesn't start (or won't exit) on Ubuntu 12.04

October 29th 2014

I'm not entirely sure what's going on here. But it seems that when you fully quit HipChat on Ubuntu 12.04 (other versions not tested) it doesn't want to exit fully.

When you close it (and right click the notification bar and click "Quit HipChat" it still doesn't exit. Trying to launch it again from the applications list just does nothing.

Try to start it in the command line and you'll get this:

Text Snippet:
me@xps:~$ hipchat
HipChat is already running; activating other instance.
Run a new process with --detach.

So, it's already running. But killall chipchat reports:

Text Snippet:
me@xps:~$ killall hipchat
hipchat: no process found

Huh. Weird. Here's what you need to do:

Text Snippet:
me@xps:~$ ps ax | grep hipchat

You'll get this output (or something similar)

Text Snippet:
2461 ?        Sl     0:40 /opt/HipChat/bin/hipchat
10555 pts/0    S+     0:00 grep --color=auto hipchat

That's easy. Now, take that number above. (for me in this example it's 2461)

Text Snippet:
me@xps:~$ kill 2461

Try to launch it again. It works fine. Hope you find it helpful!
